Big Porn vs. Sexy Amateurs

“If a new communications technology is going to work”, tech experts have opined, “it will work first by spreading dirty pictures”.

And so it proved, from naughty postcards through raunchy magazines, cinema, video, DVD, the internet and most recently mobile phones, which young people have been using to “sext” each other with naked pictures of themselves.

The internet seemed like an unstoppable factor in the worldwide expansion of the porn business.  However, after conferring enormous growth over the last decade or so, online access now seems to be turning the growth phenomenon into something else.

The total sex-related entertainment market is still substantial at something between $10 and $15 billion, but current trends suggest that the wilting online video business may detumesce the whole market, with other revenue not growing fast enough to counter the vid-pic droop.

Some porn-industry mavens blame a technology-led drift to “do-it-yourself” online sex involving amateurs. Says one: “People are making movies in their houses and uploading them to websites. …It’s killing the market”.  Says another rueful inside commentator, “The barrier… is so low. All you need is a cellphone camera and a couple of people to have sex…”

The curious now have easy and anonymous access to “porn from nowhere” for free, or at greatly reduced prices compared to those charged by the big-name porn distributors.

Pi says:  when people advocated “free love” back in the 1960s, is this what they had in mind?
